     Background Information:

The Border Health Meeting has been developed as a mechanism for sharing information on activities and the situation along the Thailand-Myanmar border areas; for discussing common border health issues and seeking appropriate solutions to support potential cross-border activities; and to promote and strengthen cooperation among organizations working in the border areas.

The first Border Health Meeting, focusing on malaria, HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis, was held during 11-12 March 2002 in Mae Sot District, TakProvince. The second meeting, focusing on more general health issues in the border areas, was held on 27-28 March 2003 in RanongProvince. The third meeting was held during 18-19 March 2004 in Chiang Mai. The meetings were attended by provincial health officers from all ten provinces along Thailand-Myanmar border, representatives from the central administration of MOPH, NGOs, donors, researchers, regional offices for disease prevention and control and UN organizations.

The Border Health Meeting is intended to help identify issues and collaborate on appropriate ways to address these issues.     In order to do so, group discussions have been held during each Border Health Meeting.     At the first meeting, the need for improved sharing of information resulted in the initiation of Provincial Health Coordination Meetings in the ten border provinces.     At the second meeting, group discussions resulted in the development and distribution of a multi-lingual medical records book, a capacity building workshop for Provincial Health Coordination Meetings and greater focus on migrant data collection.     As a result of the third meeting, a place was established on the WHO website for sharing border health reports and assessments, and greater focus has been placed on immunization and water and sanitation.    Topics for discussion at the fourth Border Health Meeting will be determined by participants prior to the meeting.

To provide a forum for sharing health-related information, discussing common border health issues and seeking appropriate solutions for solving health problems along Thailand-Myanmar border areas, the fourth Border Health Meeting is being organized and scheduled for March 2005 in KanchanaburiProvince.
