The World Health Organization
(WHO) is the directing and coordinating authority for health within the
United Nations system. It is responsible for providing leadership on global
health matters, shaping the health research agenda, setting norms and
standards, articulating evidence-based policy options, providing technical
support to countries and monitoring and assessing health trends. WHO
headquarters is located in Geneva,
Switzerland.
To function effectively, WHO has 6 Regional Offices spread across the globe:
§ African Region (AFRO)
§ Region of the Americas (PAHO)
§ European Region (EURO)
§ Eastern Mediterranean Region (EMRO)
§ Western Pacific Region (WPRO) and the
§ South East Asia Region (SEARO).
The South East Asia Region covers
eleven countries including Thailand.
SEAR Office is located in New Delhi in India. SEARO
is under the leadership of the Regional Director Dr. Samlee
Plianbangchang.
WHO Thailand is composed of 11
professional and 23 administrative staff dedicated to assist and cooperate
with the Ministry of Public Health and relevant partners in implementing
twenty nine (29) projects that span from disease prevention, health promotion
to health systems development.
Aside from the WHO Country Office
Team, WHO has two Regional Sub-units in Thailand. The Mekong Malaria Programme (MMP) has two staff. The
MMP works closely with the Faculty of Tropical Medicine in Mahidol University. The Regional Sub-unit for
Communicable Disease Control (CSR) in Thailand has five (5) staff. The
CSR Sub-unit was borne out of the decentralization policy initiated by the
Regional Office in SEARO and the felt need for a regional presence in Bangkok to better
interact with agencies in this part of the Region.
The
organizational structure of WHO Thailand (with the two Regional Sub-units) is here.
